Intrada - 18.09 - LEGRAND & ROSENMAN

#1 Post autor: Adam » śr wrz 12, 2012 18:28 pm

Two Special Releases -- one from the 70s and while it has a premiere of the complete underscore which is very much a fine work by the composer, the main attraction to some is the premiere release of the LP contents, including many famous songs.

The second release is one I'm very excited about in particular. It's a Special Collection release from the 80s, a "western" (I'm not entirely sure western is the best choice, but its the closest I could think of) score, by a big composer never represented on the Intrada label before (I don't think -- there's been so many releases it's easy to loose track). The composer doesn't have that many big orchestral scores, but when he is in front of a big orchestra, he truly shines. This is one epic, symphonic adventure that I haven't seen anyone actually ask for, which leads me to suspect it might be a bit unknown. You're all in for a treat, though

Side note: the "western" features two actors, one famous, one not as much. The one-sheet features both, and the famous actor's estate cleared usage of this, the not as famous actor's widow was not so interested in giving permission. So as goofy as that artwork is, I am a bit sore about not be able to use it for the cover.

World premiere release of magnificent Michel Legrand score for tough 1980 western pitting Charlton Heston, Brian Keith against worthy Native American adversaries. Legrand anchors with gorgeous, wide-open main theme, painted in broad strokes with bright major key harmony in abundance. Nice trumpet fanfares judiciously sprinkled within theme is exciting, regal touch. But action is keynote! Composer writes what is most surely his busiest score, replete with incredibly challenging high brass figures, moto-perpetuo rhythms that seldom quit, orchestral fury to burn! Presentation of this most exciting Legrand work became possible only when Sony located mint condition stereo masters amongst various film elements stored within Chace Audio facilities. Great find! Fans of composer will enjoy both his soaring theme melody plus his dynamic action. And - with nod to important piece of film scoring artform now gone - Legrand finishes what he starts, brings entire score to close with powerful coda! No just walking off podium before work is done, no cut-and-paste editorial assembly and happily no unrelated songs... just a magificent orchestral finale actually composed as majestic wrap-up to score. Wow! Michel Legrand conducts. Intrada Special Collection release available while quantities and interest remains!

Cool find for Leonard Rosenman fans! Just in time for Woody Guthrie's 100-year celebration currently underway, Intrada is proud to present world premiere of Rosenman's Oscar-winning score. Rosenman not only adapted famous Guthrie tunes for Hal Ashby film with David Carradine but composed some 20 minutes of his own original orchestral music in signature style. Results brought him an Academy Award in 1976. Composer himself spoke of desire to one day revisit music in miniature symphony form for concert performance but it was not to be. At one point we were simply going to present premiere CD release of wonderful United Artists LP featuring abundance of tuneful depression-era Guthrie material with mere snippets of original score mingled within album tracks. Upon locating actual album masters in MGM vaults we also discovered original 2" 24-track scoring elements long thought lost to the ages. In mint condition, these complete session masters allow us to present Rosenman's superb music complete, with broader musical architecture in mind. Each "movement" becomes a miniature concert suite of its own. Importance of score in composer's career is hard to over-emphasize but our CD also features that original 1976 UA album as well. Flipper cover allows you choice of original album artwork or alternate campaign (which our crew gave preference to.) Leonard Rosenman conducts both his original score plus orchestral adaptations of Guthrie material. David Carradine sings famous lyrics for film and UA album presentation. Intrada Special Collection release available while quantities and interest remains!
