During the 2019 D23 Expo, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross were revealed to be composing the film's score, while Jon Batiste is set to be writing jazz songs for the film. Soul is the first Pixar film directed by Docter since Monsters, Inc. (2001) not to be scored by Michael Giacchino (Monsters, Inc. was composed by Randy Newman).[4] Batiste composed jazz music for the film's New York City sequences, while Reznor and Ross wrote an instrumental score for the scenes taking place in "The Great Before".[22] Batiste said that he wanted to create jazz music that felt "authentic", but also "accessible to all ages".[22] He also wanted the themes to tie into the "ethereal nature" of "The Great Before" while still being on Earth.[22] Batiste also sometimes worked with Reznor and Ross to "blend the two worlds, musically".[22] Cody Chesnutt also wrote, produced, and performed an original song for the film, titled "Parting Ways".[27] Batiste also arranged a new version of the song "It's All Right", originally performed by The Impressions, for the film.[28] It features in the end credits and is performed as a duet between Batiste and British soul singer Celeste.[29]

On December 16, 2020, on the Soul Stories podcast, co-director and co-writer Kemp Powers announced the soundtrack would be released on December 18.[30]

Cóż, jazzowe kawałki są super ale nie jestem zwolennikiem łączenia dwóch, diametralnie różnych stylów muzycznych na jednym albumie, w jednym filmie ( w tym wypadku, jazzu i eterycznej elektroniki? ) i ten dualizm mnie jednak rozprasza podczas słuchania tej pracy. Nie powiem, eksperyment ciekawy, ale to nie moja bajka Taki "Naprzód" był przynajmniej spójny muzycznie i szkoda, że to jednak nie Giacchino

Ja się ciągle zastanawiałem skąd ten Jon Batiste wydaje mi się znajomy. A teraz sobie skojarzyłem, że to ten gość z zespołu w programie Stephen Colbert Show, który zawsze mówi "Yeah", kiedy Stephen Colbert opowiada jakiś dowcip.

Szkoda, że to już trzeci film Disneya / Pixara bez fizycznego wydania - u Disneya ostatni był, chyba "Ralph Demolka w Internecie" a u Pixara "Iniemamocni 2" i aż się zastanawiam, czy nowego Howarda wydadzą na CD?

A w ogóle to jak i gdzie można oglądać ten film?

Nieprofesjonalnie i niemerytorycznie bez znajomości obrazu, przesłuchałem sobie to "Soul" i mnie nie porwało. Oczywiście jestem świadom, że w koncepcji film ten podział na muzykę jazzową i elektroniczną może mieć sens, ale na za długim albumie jest pewien chaos przez to. Ale skoncentrujmy się na samej muzyce, najpierw tej od Reznora i Rossa. Można nazwać tę elektroniką przyjemną i na pewno lżejszą od tego stworzył do The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, czy Gone Girl. Z drugiej strony to bardziej takie elektroniczne plumkanie, które może robić za jakąś tam tapetę, ale np. takie The Social Network było bardziej wyraziste. Tutaj też średnio pomaga, że jeżeli chodzi o utwory jest taki plankton.
Co zaś się tyczy jazzu od Jona Batiste, to nie jestem wszak w pewnym sensie ekspertem, czy koneserem tej muzyki jak Marek, czy Ludi, ale jakoś i jego kawałki mnie nie porwały. I tutaj już Justin Hurwitz, czy Daniel Pemberton potrafili lepsze jazzowe kawałki wykrzesać, które bardziej mnie poruszą. Tutaj to trochę bardziej taki jazz, dla faktu bycia jazzem.
Oczywiście sama animacja i jak się w niej muzyka sprawuje może zrewidować moją opinię, ale na razie to dla mnie ten album to takie typowe 3/5. Nic złego, ale też nic wielkiego.
