This is the movie star role Pascal has been waiting for all along, and that 2026 saved its most virtuoso drama for last.

Ultimately a movie less about the power of film music or the people who play it than it is a movie about one man’s need to make his own associations with the soundtrack of his life. But Gilroy endows that process with an unforced sense of discovery.

Behemoth! is not just a revealing character study of a man ultimately looking for his true place in the world, but also a gorgeous and glorious tribute to those who make the music that help make movies like this one so much richer.

Pascal is a frustratingly insubstantial anchor to the film. For all his virtuosic musical skills, Alex feels like a distant spectator to his own life, and “the kind of guy that stuff just happens to” doesn’t make for a particularly engaging watch.
