INTRADA - PLANY WYDAWNICZE
Re: INTRADA - PLANY WYDAWNICZE

Perhaps Craig Safan’s finest score, certainly his most emotionally powerful, finally expanded! Mike Robe directs massive 2-part ABC mini-series from Evan S. Connell novel chronicling rich examination of George Armstrong Custer. Robe provides most detailed look at legendary soldier ever made by Hollywood. Gary Cole brings Custer to vivid life, Rosanna Arquette plays wife Elizabeth, Rodney A. Grant is Sioux leader Crazy Horse, other cast includes Dean Stockwell, David Strathairn. Melissa Mathison scripts, focuses on last decade of Custer’s life, climaxing with fateful Battle of the Little Big Horn in 1876. As does book and film, Safan finds inspiration in Custer as man, not myth, neither hero nor villain. Score anchors with not one but several primary thematic ideas, all of them colored with degree of sorrow: lean, wide-interval solo trumpet line with nods to military and solitude of Custer, incredibly moving string orchestra theme highlighting Custer’s actions and place in history, haunting melody (heard first in brass but typically on oboe) for “Libby”. Strings dominate much of score, woodwinds carry intimate solo lines, Americana colors carry weight… but always the mournful trumpet hovers, cries, pierces. Keynote everywhere is sadness. Fans of composer’s action-heavy The Last Starfighter score also get their day with numerous aggressive brass-led cues underscoring vivid warfare between U.S. Army and Sioux warriors, culminating at Little Big Horn. Safan also wrote several pieces for Native American flute, accompanied sparingly by tom toms, deer-hoof rattles plus synthesizer drones. Independent of orchestral material, these are none-the-less used beautifully as score underlining scenes of Sioux life. In addition, Safan fashions handful of Irish period pieces functioning as score plus adapts key “Garryowen” tune that became basis for Custer’s own marching song as he went into battle. Highlights in 100-minute score are numerous, but emotional spotlight goes to tragic strings of “Washita Massacre”, passioned and emotional final parting sequence, “The Big Goodbyes”, propulsive action of cues focusing on Little Big Horn. Extra special spotlight goes to brief but powerful “A Good Day To Die”, underlining beautifully directed sequence of Sioux warriors readying for battle juxtaposed with image of Custer leading charging 7th Cavalry inexorably into history. As the tragic theme swells, (eloquently described by author Frank K. DeWald in his compelling notes), Safan commands his brass to the fore in a magnificent orchestral peroration in the major, a rare sonority in this minor-key dominated masterpiece! Intrada first visited Safan’s work in a single CD of highlights after the film’s 1991 premiere. For this oft-requested return to the beloved classic, Intrada expands the music across 2-CDs, presenting everything in film sequence with all original Native American and Irish cues appearing as composer intended. Entire project was produced and prepared with composer in attendance at Intrada. Handsome packaging designed by Kay Marshall compliments Safan’s memorable music. Dennis Sands engineers, Craig Safan composes, conducts. Intrada Special Collection 2-CD set available while quantities and interest remain!
Re: INTRADA - PLANY WYDAWNICZE

No i te bumpery...

Re: INTRADA - PLANY WYDAWNICZE
Rousing, greatly expanded Joel McNeely score on CD! Walt Disney Pictures presents, Mackenzie Astin, Kevin Spacey, David Ogden Stiers, Brian Cox star, Charles Haid directs. Winter 1917. Grueling dogsled race between Winnipeg, Manitoba and St. Paul, Minnesota. Inspired by this real-life event, Disney outdoor adventure finds “Iron Will” Stoneman taking over for his late father, setting off with his team of dogs to win $10,000 for his farming family. Amongst the perils: tough competitors, treacherous terrain, harsh winter elements, speeding passenger train and one brutish adversary in particular. Joel McNeely lands his first large-scale film score, in part, courtesy a 1992 soundtrack album that impressed Haid: Samantha, released by Intrada in 1992. Wonders never cease! Director sought grand Americana score in manner of Copland, Leonard Bernstein. McNeely responded with magnificent, inspired symphonic grandeur replete with action, scope and power. An album of highlights from Iron Will was released at time of film’s release albeit it contained just over a half hour of music. Intrada now expands impressive score by nearly 40 additional minutes. Courtesy Disney, Intrada was given access to film’s 2” 24-track scoring session masters, happily containing veteran engineer Dan Wallin’s original film mixes across 6 channels. Masterful thematic highlights abound: Dramatic theme representing father’s spirit that guides young Will, heard in many guises from quiet to overwhelming, rousing race theme with energetic rhythms front and center, fanfares close by. Also given prominence is Will’s own soaring material as well as darker ideas heard as numerous difficulties hamper tough journey. Previously unreleased highlights also deserve spotlight: “Race Training” sequence, virtually all of the scoring for entire middle portion of film, aggressive “Escape From The Train”, “Gus Attacked”, solemn solo trumpet of “My Sled’s Busted”, rousing “The Chase”, dramatic “Short Cut”. Special mention must go to closing bars of “Finish Line” which brings film to a close: Ushering all the available power of the symphonic orchestra at his command, McNeely offers one of the most powerful film score endings of all time! Forte possibile!! (As loud as possible.) In addition to entire score, Intrada CD presents “Winnipeg Source Music” which features period arrangements made by McNeely for early sequence with Will’s arrival in Winnipeg. Compelling liner notes by John Takis include personal note from McNeely. Handsome package design by Kay Marshall completes exciting release. Dan Wallin records & mixes at Todd-AO Scoring, David Slonaker & Joel McNeely orchestrate, Joel McNeely composes, conducts. Re: INTRADA - PLANY WYDAWNICZE
