After the previous CD releases of the television works of Georges Delerue (Les Visiteurs / L’Homme qui revient de loin and Le Mythomane / L’Éducation sentimentale), Music Box Records is very pleased to explore once more the television scope of Georges Delerue's music and presents two complete scores for the significant work of French Award-winning writer/director/editor Henri Colpi: Thibaud ou les Croisades (Thibaud The Crusader) (1968) and Fortune (1969). For the cinema, Georges Delerue worked with Henri Colpi on three films (Une aussi longue absence, Mona, l'étoile sans nom and Heureux qui comme Ulysse).

Thibaud ou les Croisades tells the story of Thibaud, a half-French, half-Arab crusader knight, fulfilling various missions, ranging from escorting pilgrims through treacherous areas to the capture of enemy Turks. Georges Delerue, already renowned for his talent for scoring period pieces, was the natural choice to score the epic adventures of the White Knight Thibaud. The composer chose an instrumental foundation bringing together horns, strings and percussion through which to express the vigour and nobility of the Templars. He added to this an oboe, for appearances by the Turkish army. An English horn serves to evoke Thibaud’s nostalgic moments or, in another register, his joy. A flute and a clarinet join in for the flavorful period dances and festivity scenes. Georges Delerue creates gorgeous musical portrait in finest historical idiom and colorful music for full orchestra with exotic touches.

The origin of Fortune comes from Blaise Cendrars’ novel L’Or. It is based from the true story of Johann Sutter, a Swiss merchant who sets out for America in pursuit of new beginnings. He crosses the country, setting up a number of businesses, then makes the acquisition of an immense piece of land in the west, which he christens “New Helvetia” (present day California). Bernard Dabry and Henri Colpi adapted the novel and took a number of liberties with Sutter's actual story. The action takes place in the 19th century, and takes the form of a saga played out through the great spaces of America. For the score, Georges Delerue symbolized the American Dream with a melancholic harmonica. The score is based on sweeping themes with strings and nostalgic themes to accompany Sutter’s travels across America.

In collaboration with Telfrance, Music Box Records is very pleased to present these two expanded scores newly remastered from the original session stereo (Thibaud) and mono (Fortune) master tapes.

In collaboration with Sony ATV and Larghetto Music, Music Box Records is pleased to present on CD the collaboration between Vladimir Cosma and director Michel Berny : the two TV series Petit déjeuner compris (1980) and Billet doux (1984) and the feature film Pourquoi pas nous ? (1981).

An old lady’s slowly fading silhouette, set to a few notes on a melodica: such are the opening credits, marked indelibly into the memories of an entire generation of viewers, of Petit déjeuner compris. This six-episode series aired on French television became a smash success thanks notably to writing of the highest finesse by Danièle Thompson, the direction of Michel Berny, and the delectable music of Vladimir Cosma.
The main theme, based on a waltz in a moderate tempo and played on melodica, reflects the simplicity of this couple (Marie-Christine Barrault and Pierre Mondy), who inherits from an elderly aunt the management of an unusual family hotel. The original soundtrack includes other memorable catchy themes, bitter-sweet music and delicate colourings, such as that of guitar and electric piano. Petit déjeuner compris features the original LP program, previously issued in 1980 and fully remastered from the master tapes for this new edition.

Pourquoi pas nous ? relates the burgeoning and complex love of a man and a woman done no favours by life, and for whom, moreover, everything seems to stand in the way. In the main theme, two mandolins personify Marcello (Aldo Maccione), while two comedic synthesizers evoke the character of Jacqueline (Dominique Lavanant). The score is based on this instrumental duality which is also intended to accord credit to the two characters inhibited by their physical appearance and a manifestly mediocre destiny. The original score, presented for the first time on CD and remastered from the master tapes, features all the music written for the film.
This album also includes the original soundtrack to Billet doux with the same program previously released in the 2010 box set of Vladimir Cosma.

The limited edition of 500 units comes with an 8-page booklet with French and English commentary by Nicolas Magenham.

In collaboration with Sony ATV, Music Box Records is pleased to present the premiere CD release of 1985 French TV series Denys de La Patellière's Le Paria composed by Georges Garvarentz (Taxi for Tobruk, The Corrupt Ones, Killer Force).

Composer Georges Garvarentz was born in Athens, Greece into a family of Armenian immigrants who travelled to Europe in search of a better life. His father, Kevork Garvarentz was a professor of literature and a poet. In 1942, the Garvarentz family moved to Paris where Georges attended the Conservatoire de Paris to broaden his musical knowledge. In 1965, he met a fellow Armenian émigré named Charles Aznavour, who proved to be his most valuable creative partner: the composer/lyricist duo went on to write over 100 popular songs together. Georges even married Charles’s sister, Aïda Aznavour. In addition to writing hundreds of songs with his partner, Georges Garvarentz also kept himself busy by penning over 150 film scores in a great variety of popular genres from adventure films to spy thrillers and romantic dramas.

Denys de La Patellière (Les Grandes Familles, Marco the Magnificent, Dear Caroline) and writer Albert Kantof wrote the story of Le Paria which stars Charles Aznavour as the leading role and Jean Topart. Julien Mauriès (Aznavour), the younger of a perfumer's family is forced to go into exile after having an unfortunate experience in the estate business. He spent 20 years in Venezuela and made a fortune in the perfume business. After all those years, he decided to come back in France in order to start again and to cleanse his honour.

Georges Garvarentz composed a very powerful symphonic score with a gorgeous, broad sweeping main theme. The score is a lovely homage to the great masters of film music he admired, such as Dimitri Tiomkin, Elmer Bernstein or even Jerry Goldsmith.
The soundtrack was previously released on LP in 1985. For this premiere release of Georges Garvarentz’s Le Paria score on compact disc, this new remastered and expanded edition presents 25 minutes of previously unreleased music. The release is limited to 350 units.
